Case Study: Capacity Analysis of Solar Frames
On the Scene E-Newsletter, Edition 138, May 24, 2011
TER, the research division of CED Investigative Technologies, recently performed an analysis of SkyBuilt Power's (www.skybuilt.com) solar frame design. SkyBuilt Power is the leader in rapidly deployable, renewable energy systems and the Edison Award winner for 2011 Best Energy and Sustainability Product. These solar frames are utilized in military operations as a reliable power source in difficult environments. The panels use a combination of solar, wind and other commercial components along with batteries and optional backup generators. The stations are designed to be shipped, set up in minutes to hours and operate with little or no maintenance, logistics or fuel. CED was asked to perform an optimized design analysis of their solar panel frame for use in the California area.
The solar frame analysis included a study on the maximum wind capacity of the frame, the seismic capacity, as well as the weight of the panels and the self-weight of the frame. Calculations were performed on design load and code check ratios. Many sources were utilized in conducting these investigations:
• American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) 13th Edition Design Manual
• International Building Code (IBC) 2006
• American Society of Civil Engineer (ASCE) 7-05 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures
The design was deemed to be adequate in all areas for the location specifically studied. CED engineers have the experience, training and knowledge to conduct such investigations. Our experts are experienced and highly-qualified engineers with advanced degrees, specialized knowledge and training in many disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, biomechanical, civil, structural, chemical and material engineering.
