Over 60,000 Volkswagen and Audi electric vehicles have been recalled due to a defective gear display that could increase the risk of rollaway incidents, in accordance with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The issue originates from the failure to display the “N” (neutral) gear position on the instrument panel, which could confuse drivers. The vehicle may roll away unexpectedly if the parking brake is not engaged.

The recall affects the following Models:

  • 2024-25 Audi Q3s
  • 2023 Volkswagen Arteons
  • 2022-24 Volkswagen Tiguans

Volkswagen and Audi will inform the affected owners by April 25, 2025, and can have the brake control unit software updated at dealerships without a charge. Consumers can contact the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9153) or visit nhtsa.gov.

Prior to repair, Volkswagen suggests that owners confirm the parking brake indicator light is illuminated before exiting their vehicles.
